Single Focal Length Workshop: In-the-field Workshop

About this event

Tallgrass Prairie

IN-THE FIELD WORKSHOP with two (2) professional photographers as on-site Instructors.

WHERE:  Various locations on & around the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve

WHAT:  A wide variety of scenarios.

  • Landscapes
  • Bison
    • (if we are lucky, new calves)
  • Buildings
    • Exteriors
    • Interiors
  • Creeks
  • Trees
  • Wildflowers

The first part of the in-the-field workshop will begin discussing lens selection.  There are three (3) general lens categories:  1) Wide angle;    2) Normal range;   3)Telephoto.

A discussion of these lens categories on the proper use, the ascetics of the lens type and how to apply to your scene.

NOW . . . . the “catch” of this photoshoot is that you are only ALLOWED ONE (1) FOCAL LENGTH for all the locations, type of subjects and conditions.  The challenge is to make use of the following principles.

Remember to use the L.I.S.A. principles:

  • Light – consider available light for the shooting conditions
  • ISO - How sensitive your camera's sensor is to light. The higher the ISO number, the more sensitive to light.
  • Shutter Speed – As its name suggests, shutter speed is how quickly the shutter closes);
  • Aperture - How big the opening is that lets light in, expressed in F-stops. The larger the number, the smaller the opening

Shutter speed, ISO, and aperture — otherwise known as the exposure triangle, or the three pillars of photography.

Our professional instructors will coach you on the proper use of these principles in each of the shooting scenarios.  There are two (2) instructors on this trip to provide better one-on-one instruction.

  • The time to start this adventure is 9:00a to make use of the best light.
  • Rendezvous location and lunch details will be emailed to each registrant before the event.
  • Should weather present an issue, notifications will be sent to registrants via email.
  •  The reason for the weekday workshop is due to the availability of the instructors.
As a Bonus:

Lunch will be at the Immaculate Conception Catholic in Pawhuska.    The ‘soup kitchen’ style lunch is free; however, donations are accepted. Following lunch, we will be given a guided tour of the tabernacle.  Cameras and tripods are allowed.  There are no restrictions on lens or focal length when photographing inside the Church.

The Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Pawhuska has been a fixture in Pawhuska since 1925. Osage oil money built a beautiful church with 22 stained glass windows. The church had to get special permission from the Vatican to do that, because it didn’t allow living people to be depicted in the windows.

The window depicts real people, including Osage Chief Bacon Rind. Others in the scene were also Osage tribal members. These are considered some of the finest stained-glass windows in America.
